SCC Involvement in Immigration Issues

Immigration: The Church, the Nation, and the Journey, was a topic presented at Parish Leadership day, 2011. Sister Margaritis listens in as the presentation invites questions about the Church supporting immigration reform, challenges and opportunities facing immigrant Catholics and the impact of deportation on families and how the Church is responding.
Community gatherings continue to engage the Sisters in conversations and future planning for Assembly discussions and action plans around the issue of Immigration and emigration.
In response to family deportation in parishes where the Sisters of Christian Charity minister, Peace and Justice representatives are writing “Letters of Hardship for Immigration.”

IMMIGRATION

At the June Assembly “Immigration” was chosen by the Sisters as their theme for the 2010-2011 year. Father Daniel Groody, CSC, guest speaker at the Assembly, spoke on the “Theology of Immigration”.  “Jesus the Migrant” was his homily reflection for the Eucharistic Celebration. Reflection questions around the topic of ‘The Immigrant Today’ took place in small groups that afternoon. The discussions were shared with the larger group.

Immigration is not new to the Sisters of Christian Charity.  In the early days of our founding, Mother Pauline moved the motherhouse from Paderborn, Germany to Belgium.  Many Sisters left their homeland to staff new missions in North and South America. Today we have Sisters who immigrated to the United States from other countries. The question of immigration today has become crucial because of its magnitude – and the most vulnerable are the poor, the undocumented and the victims of human trafficking.
